About my work

This body of work has evolved from the paintings I did while living in New Zealand in 2001. The natural scenery of the country had such a significant impact on my creativity, that the paintings I produced there were unlike any of my works from the previous 15 years. The incredible flora of the untamed landscape became my newfound inspiration for painting. Preferring to paint from memory rather than a photo or real life, I would recall the plants and flowers that would catch my eye and reinvent their forms and colors to create original compositions. Because I choose to interpret nature rather that than mimic it, I often flatten forms instead of modeling them. Flowers, leaves, berries, twigs and particles of pollen transform into abstracted imagery that seem to be in a state of wind blown motion. I refer to my previous paintings and sketches as starting points for new works, drawing off of the organic iconography that has been evolving since my two years in New Zealand . My latest paintings and panel pieces reflect the loose spontaneous quality that is typical of my works on paper. The editing process is a constant one in which I am adding or dropping the abstract interpretations of natural forms. It is the accident of the drips, washes and splatters that give depth, texture and atmosphere to my kinetic compositions. I believe that paintings are about the viscosity of the paint and the process of applying it to a surface in order to create an interesting visual experience. I layer inks, acrylics and guasches to play with flat, translucent, and opaque surfaces. The journey to fuse the palette and form is at the heart of the painting process and is what I love about it.
